okay guys what do i need to do to put this explorer motor in my 68? i would like to dump the injection and swap it with acarb.what else will i have to do to get it up and working? distrib? motor mounts? and what heads are on it gt40 or gt40p? i know their is suppose to be marks on the heads but i dont know what. which one is beter and i have hooker headers already and i dont want to burn up my boots. but on the other side what do i need to get it running as is...a fuel injected car? i can pick up a good motor with all electronics with computer for 700.00. any and all help would be nice.

700 for a complete, mid mileage engine is nice. The GT40 heads are better than the earlier ones and should be fine for a mild street car. I believe you still use the older mounts. If you getting rid of the electronics and eec- go ahead and swap out distributors. There are a few 302 distributors with the right length and right gear (for the roller cam). Other than that, find a nice ~600 cfm carb and intake.

thx i will let you know... so i will have to replace the dist? or buy a msd for it? what about a cam swap and adjustible rockers? how expencive is that?
Yes I beleive that motor has the GT40P heads on it. The GT40's are the better head. The old style mounts is what you will need along with a front sump oil pan.

The Explorer engine will bolt into any 65-73 Mustang, but if it has the GT40P heads, you'll need headers made for this conversion, as the plugs stick straight out and will not clear normal Mustang exhaust.
You'll need a distributor if you remove the EFI, since the Explorer EFI doesn't have a distributor.
I wouldn't call the Explorer cam wimpy, it's just curved more for low rpm torque than the Mustang cam. Like the Mustang guys, Explorer folks tend to switch to the E303, and for the same reasons. I'd be tempted to use the E303, or even the B303, with Rhoads lifters. That would preserve driveability and still give you the full power of the cam on demand.
With the right cam gear a stock 68 distributor would be perfect for such an engine. Like any distributor, it needs to be properly adjusted on a distributor machine. Many spend hundreds on exotic ignition systems when an hour on the machine with their stock distributor could give the same results. Look around, most shops won't know what you're talking about. I know how to do this, and I have never seen a distributor that met Ford spec. The difference can turn an engine that's a dog into a tire shredder, with NO other changes, I've seen it many times.
thanx for the input guys i need all i can get. now is the e303 and or the b303 cam selections? how much are those and the lifters etc...what do you think i would spend for this swap? and is it worth it? i might have a line on an older 5.0 from an explorer i think...it is a roller 5.0 though but i dont know how to tell the diff on the heads.

Easy- the plugs stick out at the same angle on all 289, 302, 351W, and 5.0 heads, including the GT40. The GT40P heads have the plugs sticking almost straight out.
You can see how close to this 289HP manifold the GT40P plugs get.
