Default 351 cleveland 65 mustang

Just bought a new built 400+hp 351c. Got a sweet deal (2K, with a lot of extras: msd distributer, headman headers, edl intake and more) I couldnt pass it up. I want to drop it into my mostly stock 65 coupe for a sweet sleeper.

I have heard its possible, with little tricks like 64 falcon motor mounts and shorter intake. Im hoping to find someone who has tackled this combo.

I did some rough measurements, looks like it will be tight, possibly too tight. I would rather not mess with the shock towers. Any tricks or suggestions would be warmly welcome.

The deal also included some headman headers which might not work.

Also, I know the 351c runs a little hot. Any suggestions on a radiator that will work with minimal mods?.

You may want to get RMP adjustable motor mounts.

It's been done- works very well.

Nothing "tricky" about it. Stone-stock 65 Mustang mounts will work perfectly. The intake is up to you, if you get a tall one you'll need more hood clearance, but if you stay at or near stock height it'll fit. The rest is easy. The 351C will bolt-on to your 65 transmission.

I did some rough measurements, looks like it will be tight, possibly too tight. I would rather not mess with the shock towers. Any tricks or suggestions would be warmly welcome.

Yeah, get headers intended for this conversion. It'll be tight, but it fits. Might take a few whacks.

You'll need a "5.0 conversion" radiator, and 1970 351C radiator hoses. Get the special heavy-duty plastic fan shroud, not the stock metal one, and a six-blade fan with thermal clutch. Use a 3-row rad, and make sure you have the correct special 192° thermostat. There is a brass ring below the thermostat, make sure it is in place, the special thermostat seals the bypass for improved cooling. The 351C "hot" reputation comes from people screwing around with this arrangement.

Why does everyone keep telling him to use Falcon motor mounts? The 260/289/302/ AND 351 all use the same motor mounts, therefore the stock 65 Mustang mounts will work perfectly. Now if he wants something stronger, aftermarket racing style mounts, for the 65 Mustang, will also work perfectly.

I have a set of these headers in the shop. We were going to use them in a Maverick with 4V heads. Still might drop one in there. The Maverick has the same engine bay that the 63-66 Falcon/Fairlane/Mustang has

What do you mean the car is mostly stock? You don't want to just drop a 400hp+ engine into a car with crap suspension, no chassis reinforcement and a wimpy trans.

Best trap 107.11mph, we'll see what the new intake/carb setup does.

I agree. If you are going to have an engine with more than enough power you will want to reinforce the chassis. This means subframe connectors and monte carlo bar and 1 peice export brace. You will need a stronger transmission. So, you will need to decide if its going to be an auto or manual and overdrive or not. You will also want to make sure it at least has a dual bowl master cylinder and front disc brakes.

For 30 yrs through word of mouth at car shows, magazines, and what not, if you asked someone "Can I install a cleveland in my 65" the stock answer was "Not unless you cut back the shock towers". Then the internet came along and these folks got to say it to an even larger audience and put together pages of 'information' that contain some things that are correct and other things that are not. Thanks to a few people who never listen a combination was put together that enables a person to bolt the motor into the car without doing anything to the shock towers as your link article recommends. Motor mount selection is key in the equation as well as header choice.

The 64 falcon motor mounts are the same ones used in early 65 model mustangs and have a 3 piece design. I am telling him to use them because I know that they alter the position of the motor slightly lower than the later 65/66 style mounts making it easier to install the headers on the motor.

I also recommend against using those tubular auto headers with the cross over design. They where in my car when I bought it and the fordpowertrain are a much better design, fit better, and allow the use of the front cross member (which had been removed from my car when purchased because of interference with the cross over tubes).

You will also notice I run a torque strap. While the motor fits and the towers are stock, I would never profess that it isn't tight I have less than a 1/8-1/16th to the towers with everything bolted up and in place the headers would contact the towers without a strap to limit motion.
