OK. Let me see if I can clarify:

-- The smell is present whether the car is moving or not.
-- It is strongest when the windows are open on the car vs. closed when driving.
-- It is there when the car is idling.
-- Believe the PCV hose was replaced when I had the carb replaced.
-- Checked the hoses from the steel lines to the gas tank...may need to be replaced.
-- New hood to cowl seal.
-- Don't really smell anything when the heater is working.
-- Know there are several places in the trunk that need plugging...open to the outside.
-- No seal between back seat and trunk.
-- Can't see any leaks from the filler hose, though it is old. Caulking around the tank edge in the trunk looks non-existent.
-- Did notice that there is some black residue on the driveway below where the exhaust pipes are. Looks like a dried black liquid was sprayed there.

The dried black liquid is most likely just carbon that was blown out with condesation.

There is no seal between the interior and the trunk. There is only a peice of fiberboard type stuff behind the seat.

Are you leaking oil at all? Check on your exhaust manifolds to see if you have a trail of burnt on liquid. You may be leaking alittle which would make the oil just stick to and burn on the exhaust manifold or pipes going back. My car would not smell sitting still but on the highway it would stink up a storm because I had a slight oil leak that would fly back onto the exhaust and burn up. Its not just an Idea: because it happend to me.

One more thing: Notice that the exhaust/gas odor lingers around the car long after it is turned off. Like more than an hour. Can walk by the outside and smell it, though have not been able to isolate to any one part of the body.

Right after shutoff, take off the air cleaner and check for a wet manifold or wet gaskets around the carb. It's possible one of the carb gaskets or fuel hose is leaking a small amount of gas, not enough to puddle but enough to smell. Also check for drips when running with the air cleaner off.
Modern gas additives are really hard on old style gaskets. My Autolite was rebuilt and started leaking again after only 6 months. The cure was a new Edelbrock carb (like they say on their website, it's compatible with modern gas). It's been running great for 2.75 years, no more gas smell.

If the PCV system is not functioning or the breather is clogged, it can give off some bad fumes too.

No leak around the carb gasket. In fact, not much of a gas smell at all inside the engine compartment when it is running...and not seeing any leaks around the exhaust manifolds. Got a small leak in the radiator hose, but like that is news...

Can't see any gas leaking around the filler hose in the trunk, nor is there any sign of a gas leak near the tank. Still need to run the exhaust pipes underneath...and not sure if the gas line from the tank to engine runs on top of the exhaust pipes. If so, if there is a leak in that line, it could drip and burn on the pipes, yes? Or would that blow me to the moon?

as long as the exhaust doesn't heat the fuel line (cold fuel works better) you'll be fine. If gas were to drip on the exhaust it would cause rapid evaporation of the fuel and would smell quite a bit but thats about it.. The pipe is never hot enough to set the fuel on fire (probably) the flash point for gas is listed at about 500F but im not sure under what conditions. I know dropping a lit cigarette in a puddle of gas will not set the fuel on fire....so yeah that means that part from team America world police where Joe tells Tim Robbins that he has bad news "Im a smoker" and throws the lit cigarette onto Tim who had previously spilled gas on himself, setting him ablaze...nope no in real life but damn it looks cool on TV.
