I have a '65 8, automatic coupe in which, at idle, with no electrical load the ammeter gauge will quickly flicker back and forth. If you turn on the interior lights, they will also flicker in intensity "in time" with the gauge. If you increase the electrical load (turn on headlights, heater) or increase increase speed, things settle down normally. I've changed the voltage regulator and battery and the car still has the problem. Has anyone had this problem, or can suggest the solution?

I had the same light flickering experience on my 68 Mustang. I recently replaced the original old vibrater type voltage regulator with the new electronic voltage regulator and the ammeter shows steadly charging amps and no more flickering of head lights, instrument lights, and dome light. I brought my VR at Pep Boys for $17.00.

I had the same flickering lights problem. Mustang Monthly did a piece on the electronic regulator (no moving parts). It solved my problem. I didn't bother but they say you can swap out a original looking cover and put it on the new unit for a stock look.
