the dipstick tube on my 289 broke in half, i bought a new one but im trying to get the piece thats till in the engine out. It should just slip out because the new one isnt threaded or anything.
is there a trick to it or something i can rigg up to get it out easily?

It's pressed in, (not threaded) so drawing it out will be difficult.
squeeze it near the base with the vice grips and work is side to side. spray a little oil on it so you can break the tension between the timing cover and the tube. You may even have to cut it off and squeeze it till it loosens

99% of the time the tube will break flush with the timing cover making it impossible to grip it with anything. Find a sheet metal screw that is big enought to start its self in the hole. Tighten it down in the hole but not too much then grab the head of the screw with vice grips or channel locks and tap up on it with a hammer. I never met one I could not get out in 10 minutes. It takes longer to find the right screw than to get the tube out. Sometimes you can find a machine bolt that will work but the sheet metal/self tapping type screw works the best.
