Default Why the 351W firing order?

What was Ford's reason for changing the firing order from the old 289/302 firing order to the 351/5.0 HO firing order?

That is a question that I would like to know the answer to as well. I think it had something to do with the roller cam setup. I'm not sure though.

302 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
351 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
as you can see the the only thing they did was to swap the 2nd/3rd with the 6th/7th in the firing order. that works with the same crank, different cam.
I suspected the reason was to get rid of crossfiring issues for 7-8, but the 351 firing order has the same problem with 6-5
So the only explanation I have for this is a more balanced engine run. it's probably less stress or smoother, engine lasts longer ... somethign they probably could only figure in a long term test

i think it takes a little stress off the front of the crank that is generated by the 1-5 firing order - but im not positive on that.

i know there are cams for the SBC that swapped a couple cylinders firing order and they pick up extra HP - there's a good chance its the same deal on the Fords as well.

that's a good thought with the 1/5. both pistons sit on the same part of crank

I had always thought it was because of the stress of the 1-5 order myself. but the 351 has the 4-8 on the tail end. Maybe they figured there was more support on the rear than the nose.

I was just curious...well, I also accidently ordered a cam that was the old firing order to put in the 5.0 to go in my '66. I guess that it won't hurt anything (that's what the cam guy said)...hell, the old firing order was used in the 289 race motors and Boss 302s.

want hurt a thing!! the cam is the only part that knows the difference. the stress on the 1-5 was the reason for the change.

Supposedly it was to revise main bearing loads, so probably the 1-5 issue people mentioned.

Best trap 107.11mph, we'll see what the new intake/carb setup does.
