Question clutch cable and tranny problems

hi i have a 1966 mustang coupe that originally came with the inline 6 but then we swapped it to a 302 Cleveland then a freind of mine convinced me to get a t-5 transmission 0ff a 86 or 87 mustang 5.0 saying it would fit now the problem is that we are having trouble with the whole clutch line that is ment to be pulled and the clutch petal on the car has a push rod that pushes out instead of pulling the cable a whole diffrent concept
so if anybody has any soulutions please do let me know and i am kinda new to the whole mustang game
thanks a lot

I don't think there is any such animal as a 302 cleveland. Is it a 351 cleveland?

If you are are trying to use a clutch cable, then you have to change how it is connected to the pedal.

Which clutch cable are you using?

Take a look at these sites for more info on clutch cables.

I'm guessing you swapped the 6-cylinder with a 302. If so, then yes, you can swap the lingage over to a cable setup very easily. However, you will need the correct parts to do so. If you want to run the cable setup (buy a reputable kit like Mustang Steve's, nice pedal with quadrant), you will also need a T5 bellhousing (used on 86-93 mustang 5.0's), it has a pivot ball threaded into the back side of the bellhousing (where the transmission bolts on). The clutch fork pivots on that ball, so when you press the clutch pedal, the cable pulls the clutch fork and throw-out bearing forward, thus depressing the clutch. The bellhousing also has a retainer cast into the forward side of the bellhousing for the clutch cable to rest in, this holds the cable in place and prevents it from moving when the clutch is engaged.

The linkage style is just the opposite, it uses a z-bar pivoting between the top of the frame rail and engine block. When you press the clutch, the z-bar presses towards the front of the car on the top side, towards the rear of the car on the bottom (clutch fork side). So, the linkage on the clutch fork side pushes instead of pulling.....

Without the correct bellhousing, you can do a cable setup, but it will take some serious work to make it right. The links posted in the earlier post are great to help you understand how it all works and what you need. I have to say, it is really nice with a cable setup, very smooth and easy just make sure you leave some clearance between your headers and the cable.......

I always use the stock (66 or whatever) clutch linkage with T5 installations. Works perfectly. Available anywhere. Just call Glazier Nolan or your favorite Mustang supplier and tell them you need the whole clutch linkage for a 66 with a T5 transmission.

There was one engine that could be called a 302 Cleveland, although it never was. It was called the BOSS 302.
