It's pretty simple. You don't need the key on. Just take a screwdriver, place the end of it on the pos terminal of the solenoid and lean it over until it contacts the s temrinal. If you get a spark but nothing else, the sol's dead. If you get a click but no crank, the problem is down the line or the starter. If it cranks, problem is in the wiring to the s term.
so i did a bunch of research...I can really touch a metal screwdriver with a plastic handle on the positive starter selonoid terminal and then the starter switch terminal and NOT be electrocuted?
Sure you can. It's only 12 volts. Even the high voltage of the ignition system will only stun you. The power will only go through the screwdriver until it reaches the s term. Just hold onto the handle.
yeah, it's safe. it'll spark a little bit and weld some metal to your screwdriver, so use a cheap one and don't touch the frame or the metal part of the screwdriver. use one hand and you'll be fine (you don't want to run any current across your heart).
if all goes well the engine will turn over.
make sure nothing that you care about like fingers, hair, and clothing are near the fan blades or accessories when you do this.
