DUDE! Get a spring compressor before you kill yourself! Coil springs that come un****ed at the wrong time can be deadly.

He can't use a sprnig compressor with the shock still in the spring. Take a long pry bar and go under the uppercontrol arm, by the upper ball joint. The end of the prybar will need to be on top of the frame where the upper control arm bolts on. You will be able to get enough leverage to lift the control arm up and slide a piece of wood between the upper control arm and the frame. When you let off the pry bar the the spring should be unloaded enough to upbolt the shock.

Yes he can. http://www.etoolcart.com/macphersons...ratd-3054.aspx It says McPherson strut spring compressor but they work just as well for these coil springs as they are designed to be used on the outside of the spring. I have used them for this many times.

Yes he can 67t5ponycoupe.....there are external compressors available.
Two required per spring and they are quite safe...this yanking it out with a chain is begging for a concussion.

Rmodel is right too, if he has a torch he can slice it but only if the front is jacked up and the control arms are all the way down so there is little pressure built up in the spring.

Have a buddy with a pickup truck? Borrow a couple of ratcheting tie-down straps.
They may not be the safest way, but they should compress your springs and would be safer than the cut-n-run method. Probably as safe as the chain.. If you don't want to invest in a spring compressor for one time use, then you might want to invest $10 for some straps... can use them to pull out a bumper or dent or even hold on a transmission<grin>

is the body of the shock pressing against the top of the fender apron?

If you are jacking it up the spring should compress unless something is binding and preventing it from happening.

I got the shocks off this morning.
I borrowed an external spring compressor as that is all I could find locally without going 35-40 miles to get to Auto zone.
I first thought of compressing the spring, but the thing wouldn't fit in between the coils with the hock in place to get it to work, so that option was out.
Lynn
Anyway.... I was able to get the other shock bolt back on and re tighten it down bring the back bolt close enough to get a socket on it.

Now I should be able to get the springs out this afternoon with the compressor.

Lynn
