Default A few Hi-po 289 TLC questions.

Im am just recently new to this forum..and have a couple questions that I am sure have already been answer before..But

1966 coupe hi-po 289

I want to start replacing parts and have been thinking of what order to go in.

I havent driven in a year and a half and havnt even got to start it really because I havent been home much.

I need to replace the headers and exhaust.

Possibly replace the gaskets (any kits out there?)

Maybe new distributor/water pump

New battery

The starter, alternater, radiator are new.

I plan on keeping the original parts that still work but have seen better days. I dont necessarily want original parts but maybe a bit of an upgrade. I was thinking Hooker Header and Flowmasters? But im looking for a good (loudess) sound. Basically Im looking for names and good opinions on parts. Any other parts I should consider replacing and what order.

Thanks for you time.

I've let mine sit longer than that with no ill effects at all. The only real worry is brakes. When they sit that long, bad things can happen to brakes.

I need to replace the headers and exhaust.
Headers or manifolds? I switched from headers to 289HP manifolds years ago, never been sorry. Unless you are racing the car, go with the stock dual exhaust.

Sure. But if it's not leaking, don't.

Maybe new distributor/water pump
A new C5OF-E distributor? Why? They are painfully reliable. Water pump? If it's smooth and tight, and the seal is not ancient, leave it. If in doubt, replace it. One caveat- if it's a legit original 289HP water pump, do not let it out of your sight. Rebuild it.

New battery
How old is the old one? Has it been properly stored, with a Battery Tender, etc?

The starter, alternater, radiator are new.

Then go stock. Nice under power, calm when cruising. I drove a bunch of Mustangs last summer, many of which had Flowmasters. They can keep them. After a few miles, I was not impressed. Even when driven carefully, you'll piss off the neighbors coming home late at night.

Basically Im looking for names and good opinions on parts. Any other parts I should consider replacing and what order.

Order depends on what's wrong/undesirable. After many years of driving a 289HP, I gradually went back to stock parts. The one modification you MUST do is to port-match the exhaust ports to the exhaust. This will improve power and smoothness at all speeds, a much better improvement than noisy exhaust.

If you can check out my photos it might help out some.

Im as newb as they come and Ive had the car for 6 years now.

The gaskets are leaking out of the valve covers it looks like..so any where to find kits?

Battery is trashed..I just need a new one..Heard Optima were good and if so what kind should I get?

The water pump as far as I can tell def. looks original. (how could I tell)? And if you dont mind what is so good about them, and who rebuilds them?

I wouldnt mind the stang being loud (not rediculous) but kinda loud with a good sound..Its not a daily drive by any means and I live in the country so no worry about neighbors (ha).

Between original and and flowmasters what is the difference? between what it does power/sound wise?

Thanks again.
