transmission help

My friend and I are currently rebuilding a 64 1/2 mustang that has been in a barn for the past 31 years. After taking the transmission out and rebuilding it we have had some issues with reconnecting the gears. After bolting everything back up we cant seem to get it to go into neutral. It is a 4 speed transmission. Other than taking everything back off and retracing our steps we are not sure what to do. Any ideas to what the problem is?

Have you ever rebuilt a 4-speed transmission before?

no, we dropped the transmission and had some local professional help rebuilding it. when we put it back in we just retraced our steps of taking it out.

Okay, that's good. Smart!

The only thing I could suggest is that possibly the shift linkage is binding and preventing the transmission from shifting properly, especially if it was shifting....(whoah...that was almost a very bad typo! lol), okay before it was reinstalled into the car.
