k...i bout a 67 coupe that is in decent condition except for the 289......needs some work and has been beaten pretty badly, on top of that i want more power........................so this being said i now have a 302 out of a 93 mustang, its been rebuilt and carborated so that it would have that classic look(that was the gentlmans plans but now he has a 427). here is the problem less than a month ago my starter went out, so i went to autozone and bought a little starter, put it in my car and *grind* was the noise i got...so i took the starter out and saw that it totaly destroyed my flywheel......not to mention the flywheel was resting on the nose of the starter so it was going to get chewed anyways, so i took the original starter in and it turns out its a starter for an automatic.....crazy i know but it works fine now.....so problem is will this flywhell work on the new 302? or do i have to buy a new starter, flywheel, and tranny? 4spd manual tranny in it currently

now your answer will depend on the year of your 302 as 1982 and newer 302 use a 50oz balance... classic use 28oz balance

ok so youll need a 50oz flywheel 157 tooth(assuming you have the small bellhousing)
you can also just have a new ring gear installed esp since you a;ready have a wear patten for your clutch etc (unless adding a new clutch)
personally id do a new ring gear for about 40$

You shouldn't need anything else. You know, it seems to me that the parts stores can NEVER get that starter thing right. I have had it happen a couple of times also. It's like all their application books are wrong.
Oh, as for the ring gear, it's common practice to just take your ring gear off, flip it over, and reinstall it if the teeth are bad on one side. This only works for manual transmission cars as the gear is not removable on an automatic flexplate. You will need to heat the ring gear with a torch to get it to expand to do this, though.

no i wouldnt replace the flywheel only the ring gear..... if you replace the flywheel it will include a new ring gear

i didnt get it...some how my car takes an automatic's starter.....so i had to buy a $250 flywheel and get a tech to drop and replace the dam thing......way more money spent on that then just a 40$ starter.......very disapointing and confusing

what 4spd do you have?? maybe its one out of a 80s model stang and iirc it would use an auto starter

so i can keep my 157 tooth flywheel that is on my 289 to use on a 93 302 even tho the flywheel wait is different?
