Default help with tach in '69 Mach 1

I've put a D.U.I. (HEI) distributer in my '69 390. This is just like a GM dist
with enclosed coil. Has 12v in and tach connection. My tach will not read the signal (tried with newer tach and it works just fine). The old wire from the tach was actually the +v resistance wire to the old dist. Perhaps the
Auto Meter tach adapter 9117? or ideas???
