Default Well Trim Molding Putty

I've removed the well trim molding from my vert for painting. What a PITA!!!!! Broke an already broken and glued one on the drivers side before finding the nut in the corner!!!!!

My molding had some sort of putty covering the nuts as well as the rear deck lid mounting nut. The putty was then covered with what looked like black duct tape. Anyone know where to get new of both of these?

The putty has lost alot of it's pliability and no matter how much i work it, I cannot get it to soften back up. Only thing I can think of for the putty would be plumbers putty, but don't know how well it would hold up & whether it would harden or not.

OK, I think I've found a replacement.

The product is called Duct Sealer & can be bought at most hardware stores.

For ex. Lowes has it:
IDEAL 1 Lb. Block Duct Seal = $2.48

Product description describes it to be the same material: gray color, stays pliable, non corrosive, etc.

I will buy some & post how it works later.

Maybe this will help someone down the road.
