Default 2005 Mustang Correct Convertible Top Fluid?

I'm changing one of the hydraulic cylinders on the top of my 2005 Mustang due to a leak, and am a bit confused on what to refill the system with. The Service Manual specs Mercon as the proper fluid, but what is currently in the system (and factory as far as I know - I bought the car with 1,200 miles on it under warranty) is clear in color and not red at all. What was used at the factory? Should I use that again or Mercon?

I read where some people are using brake fluid. When I changed mine in a 2003, I went with transmission fluid. Also, most owners will change both cylinders even if one is bad.

I bought some Valvoline Mercon Auto Tranny fluid on my '01 when I replaced the lifts. Mercon is what the factory manual calls for on my year and that's what came from the factory.

BigDish, it doesn't matter what was the original fluid from the factory. Engineers have decided that the fluid that is needed is ATF Mercon.

Yes, it's red and the original isn't. They say it doesn't matter.

Pleeeeaaase don't use brake fluid. It is caustic and the rubber o' rings won't be able to take it.

Special20 is right, do them both at the same time - if you can.

Good luck.
