Top replacement

Top replacement
We have a 2007 convertible. The binding on the edges is cracking and falling apart. I am told there's no way to repair it without taking off the top and if that is done I might as well replace the whole top. I see videos on the web on replacing the top. Has anyone here replaced a top themselves? Is this something that a home mechanic with average skills could do? Thanks in advance for any replies. I was quoted $1150 to replace the top so I would like to do it myself and save $600

I beg to differ.
Unless the 07 top is wildly different from the earlier convertibles then I say go for it. I installed the top on my '02 and had absolutely no idea what I was doing but I can follow pictures and instructions.
Buy the video and an electric stapler and jam. At that price you could totally screw it up once and still be ahead of the game.
But as long as you can follow instructions and the video is worth a toot you should be in there.

Csjag,
Replacing convertible tops is what I do for a living. Having said that, the cracked binding situation is a common problem on modern convertibles and even if you take the top off, I would be surprised if anyone at an upholstery shop has the equipment to replace it.
The '05 to '15 top was totally redesigned and while it isn't as complex as brain surgery, a DIY top replacement is not something I can picture most people should try. If you do, buy the installation video by A-OK Convertible installations. And please don't start the installation on Saturday afternoon if you need to drive the car to work on Monday.
