Great info.....but....

The title of this thread says where to buy, but I don't see any recommendations.

I have a Porter Cable, but I need to buy some soap, Clay kit, pads for the PC, polish, and wax. I guess I just don't know where to start!

I've looked at :
http://www.obsessivedetail.com/ --> 60 bucks for pads alone seems to be expensive (46+tax+shipping)...I hate getting charged for tax AND shipping online...
http://www.griotsgarage.com/ --> great products but pads seem to be inferior and prices are high
http://meguiarsdirect.com/ --> good pricing and I hear good things on this forum but again...pads?

Where do you guys buy from?

so after we get the "where to buy" question answered, I'd like someone to start a Detailing 201 thread that addresses questions like:

Are all claybars created equal? I mean, clay is clay right?

Do you have to tape off stripes or stickers (like the Saleen ones on the quarters) before polishing? Can you polish them too? Can you claybar them?

How do you remove polish that you get on the plastic parts if you some gets through your tape job?

Which pad sizes are best for which applications? ie: can a 5.5 inch pad do the entire car for the budget minded? or is it just too big for some areas?

How many pads (of a single type) do you need to do an entire car? ie: does it take more than 1? do you need to clean them?

How many different types of pads does everyone use? ie: will using only the light cutting pad work for newer paint?

I'm sure other folks have lots of other questions too...I've watched youtube videos and read threads and haven't found any answers to these sorts of questions. I guess I could just jump right in and try, but I'm the type of person that tries to leverage other people's good/bad experiences...work smarter not harder!

All claybars in the US are made by the same company. They are the only one that has the copyrights as of right now. There are different levels of aggressiveness and sizes available.

I recommend taping off vinyl stripes and decals just to be on the safe side. You mainly have to be careful on the edges. If they do get oxidized, you can polish them to get them looking good again. You can also claybar them without a problem.

I mainly use 5.5 inch pads to do a vehicle. For tighter areas I use a 3.5 inch or 4 inch pad.

It really depends on what kind of condition the paint is in on how many pads you will use. On a car that is in pretty decent shape I could use 3. There have been some cars where I've had to use 10-13 pads. To clean them you can spray on an all purpose cleaner and do them by hand or you can throw them in the washing machine using normal detergent.

As far as how aggressive a pad you use depends on what kind of condition the paint is in. I always recommend starting out with the least aggressive method first and then working your way up if needed.
