I don't use over the counter claybars, ones i use are a bit abrasive, therefore wax is taken off.

ok... well meguires and zaino ones are the 2 I have used neither are abrasive and I dont see how clay can be abrasive unless it has some sorta sand in it... but for the "average" clay bar... you will need to strip the wax is what I was saying

I remember going to my buddy's house a few years ago and he was using laundry detergent to was his pick up. I thought that was a little odd.

clay bars are abrasive, and they all have different levels of how abrasive they are. Most claybars you get at the local auto store are "mild" and will remove wax as they are intended to be used annually or semi-annually. You can buy fine or ultra fine grade of claybars that can be used monthly and they won't strip wax.

There are plenty of info on clay bars out there, read up and you will see.
