Default Lot's of Q's.....

Hey guys it's been a quick passing of the Summer so far and I have some questions concerning my car. Hope someone can help!

First of all, I used Amaz today on my windows to try and remove the water spots. It worked OK on half of a couple of the windows but didnt do a thing on some others. I first tried the little scrub pad (it kind of looked like a small piece of 3M or Scotch Brite) that it came with and it put tons of fine scratches on the window, kind of like spider webbing on a car. I next used a damp towel, rubbed in with a good amount of pressure, let haze for less than a minute or until dry, then buffed off. Any help here would be great.

Secondly, I want to get some "gunk" off of where the mud flaps used to be. Other than the holes they left, thye also left some very sticky but hardened residue in the lip of the fender and partially on the rear quarter. I have tried wax, Bug and Tar, and other things with no results.

Thirdly, I seem to have some white over spray on the front cowl piece beneath the windshield and the mirrors. They are both obviously the textured black plastic and I was wondering what would be good to safely remove this stuff.

I also have been using a mix or Woolite and water in the form of a spray bottle to clean the interior pieces including the dash, door panels, etc. It does OK I guess, but is there anything else I could use to get better cleaning power?

Lastly, I wanted to get a refresher on leather conditioning. I tried the Meguirs stuff. I believe it was the 2-step one. I followed directions and no results. The car only has 46k on it and has the dark great leather. The seats are in nice shape, but I just want to ensure that they don't fade out during the hot Oregon summers and that they are getting all the nutrients they need. Not to mention I wouldn't mind to do away with some of that stretching and or cracking or whatever you call it.

Sorry for the long post, but I have been wanting to have advice on some of these things.

Thanks,
---
Sean

Sounds like you used a scrubbing pad not meant for glass -- there are some that are glass-safe (they're usually white or blue). You'll need to get a glass polish -- Eastwood sells a couple of kits (http://eastwoodco.com/, and your local auto parts store might have one that includes cerium oxide -- about the only thing that will fix that.

Mudflap gunk could probably be cleaned up with some mineral spirits or WD-40. Wax afterwards.

Overspray can often be removed with a good clay bar (I like Mothers Clay Bar), but it's tough to say how difficult it would be on the surface you're talking about. If it's indeed overspray, or simply waxy buildup in the textured plastic. If it's wax (and even if it's not), try Mothers Back-to-Black and let it penetrate... might take a couple of applications over a few weeks. Lightly buff to a soft sheen after each application.

Your Woolite mix should be fine for interior cleaning if it works for you. There are over-the-counter interior cleaners... milder is better and if Woolite works good most of the time, then use the dedicated cleaner only when you have to.

Leather conditioners won't restore damaged leather, or leather that has a "patina." It doesn't take much wear to give Mustang leather a leather patina. Again, I use Mothers Leather Cleaner and Leather Conditioner, but it may not make a significant improvement at this point. Anything you use will require periodic re-application. Apply when the surface is clean and cool, and well-vacuumed along the seams. If you have excessive soil, use the cleaner first. Generally you'll want to apply the products to a microfiber cloth or applicator for better distribution. Buff lightly with a quality cotton terry towel when done.

Sounds like you might cruise online for resources like http://detailguide.com

Great response and tips, thanks Jim. OK, so let me get everything straight here. The Mothers seat cleaner and restorer should do ok for my seats? WD-40 may take off the gook left behind from the flaps. Get something else for the glass, and clay bar on the textured cowl part to remove over spray?
