Default Clear coat flaking..

My 1988 GT's clear coat is flaking off in a few spots on the roof and hood. How would i fix this? Would wet sanding the flakes off and putting 4-5 layers of clear rattle can and buffing it out help? its a white car.

Just guessing but, I would think all the clear coat would have to be removed and the car repainted.

I wouldnt want to get the whole car repainted.. The rest of the paint is in excellent shape. I wouldnt be able to sand it down until its smooth then repaint it? Not looking for anything perfect. In fact i would be rattle canning it then rattle can clear it then buff it out

You're getting clearcoat failure in the most common areas. No real easy fix for that, we're not talking about a scratch through the clearcoat. Your basecoat is probably toast as well. You're experiencing clearcoat delamination from basecoat technically.

You could use a fine grit paper like you mentioned and use the rattle can, but your best bet is to repaint, especially if you intend on keeping the car for some time anyway. Good luck man.

Do it right. Have it repainted. It may be that you can have the clear removed around the affected area, leave the base coat, and just reshoot the clear. That would be something to be determined by the body shop though.
