Well I just bought a 1988 Ford Ranger from my aunt. It cost me all of $1. . Well the paint isnt bad, but it is also really bad. . There is some oxidation on the hood, and on the roof its all the way down to metal (well rust). It is just surface rust. Just looks like it was painted a rust color.
So I have 2 questions. Tips for the rust? And where can I find a tutorial/walkthrough on how to do a decent rattle can paint job?
Here are pics of it. Got a lot ahead of me. ha
Planning in putting a 302.

not sure about the rattle can job, but i have heard of alot of people using the roller method on cars. http://rollyourcar.com/default.aspx
and as far as the rust goes, i would try and sand it down pretty smooth and put some ospho on it. it will eat away at the rust and somewhat seal it.

its a for! lol anyways, sand the riust down to bare metal and rustolium (sp?) primer. Then find a shade that matches the car or some paint shops/stores can put manufacturer colors into cans. tape anything you dont want sprayed, take your time, and try to blend it into the old paint. Worse comes to worse, three tone it!!! lol
As for the cuts in the tailgate, file the rust out, weld a bead down them then grind and prime/paint. For the plastic I think they have a filler for it, not sure though.

remove the rust properly and take it to mechanics for paint.
It would actually be a body shop or painters.... mechanics deal with the function of the vehicle, not looks

Yeah, don't pay any professional to do any work on it, do it all yourself.
I had a 1988 Ranger...talk about taking a beating and never breaking, 160k+ on it too. I would just rattle can that beotch for less than $50 bucks and a sore elbow from sanding the roof.
