Default Rim Cleaning Question

Hello,

I have a 1997 v6 mustang with stock steel rims. Over time, they have accumulated a good amount of break dust (especially after my brakes got really low), and even though I try to clean them frequently with soap and water, the dust has accumulated and is on the rims pretty good, especially the front two.

Does anyone have any good tips to get rid of this dust accumulation and make my steel rims look like new again? It's bad enough they are ugly rims, but now the front two look significantly darker than the back two.

Any advice is much appreciated,

Thanks.

Get some break pads that product low dust. I have Hawk ceramic pads and I get little dust. To get the dust off buy wheel cleaner spray that should work. Then after that just keep them clean with soap and water more often so it dosent build up on you.

+1

When you finish cleaning your wheels off, give them a good thick coat of wax, the cheep turtlewax stuff works great. This keeps them shiny and helps repel brake dust. If they are realy filthy you may need to use 000 steel wool followed with rubbing compound and some wheel polish. All I need to do for mine now is a quick wipedown with a dry rag about twice a week (genaric brake pads).

I would go with OD Metal Rx to clean them up. The Metal Rx also leaves a layer of protection behind, so brake dust won't build up as bad.

Try Eagle 1 All Wheel & Tire Cleaner and let it work for 30- to 60-seconds and scrub gently with a wheel brush. You may have to repeat. You can get it at just about any auto supply store or probably even Walmart for about $7 or less.

Once clean, wax your wheels and use a spray wax or detailer frequently to prevent further buildup.
