Default So I detailed my engine bay today... (ugh/help!)

I decided because I had a little spare time to detail my engine bay. I bought an engine degreaser and an engine detailer from the local Autozone.

I drove home, wiped off the dust from underneath the hood, and sprayed degreaser on the trouble spots. I waited 15 mins as per the instructions then washed the whole engine bay with water. Then I dried everything off with a towel, and applied engine detailer. It looked really good, all slick and wet. The detailer is basically olive oil in a can, or at least thats what it looked like. Everything is coated with an oily residue and looks shiny and black. The instructions said to wait 20 mins, but I was in a hurry so I closed the hood after 10 and drove off to do errands.

When I got home and looked under the hood I had a nasty shock. There were white spots and streaks everywhere. On the plastic bits, the metal bits, etc...

I tried wiping the white streaks/spots off - on some bits (especially the plastic bits), the white residue came right off. On other bits, no amount of rubbing/cleaning had any effect, even with a mild detergent.

Anyone knows what happened here, what the white streaks are, and how to get rid of them? I am assuming the stuff came from either the degreaser or the detailer.

the heat from your engine combine with the stuff you used most likely caused this...this is one of the reasons i don't use over the counter detail products anymore...also, did you wait for your engine to be cool to the touch before you worked on it?

The engine was warm (make that very warm, but not scalding hot) to the touch... is there any way to remove the stuff? I already tried APC and also detergent.

I'd suspect you probably have some surface damage on any metal from the APC, and the dressing if it was the silicone OTC stuff may have contributed to the problem further. You'll need to polish any discolored metal to restore it, on the plastics, another cleaning and dressing should help.

Heres my how to on engine bay cleaning (I apologize that I use a camaro in the video)

The video shows a lot of Adam's products being used for detailing. I do not normally see Adam's sprays etc... being carried in the places I usually shop at e.g. Autozone. Do you know how good these products are and why they seem more difficult to get than e.g. McGuires'? Do you have much experience with these sprays?

yes! better than ANY product in autozone but a lot. You can get them on Adamspolishes.com or a local dealer near you. And if you ask how good these products are.... well they are the best! you'll never buy anything else guaranteed.
