Default painting valve covers questions

My covers were a mess, so i stripped them to metal and sanded.then,I may have made a mistake, I put a coat of primer on?? Was that stupid?I used the high temp primer stuff, even though probably unnecessary.
So let's say primer was not dumb.do I need to put some heat on them cure the primer so it doesn't chip if it's tapped ever so slightly? Or do I put the top coats on first and then heat them?
If curing is required I want to do it before putting them on rather than using engine heat because I dont want them to chip during install.
Thank for any input
