>10-7-04 JOHN KERRY'S JOB APPLICATION
>
>NAME: John Kerry
>
>RESIDENCES: 7 mansions, including Washington DC, worth multi-millions. I
>served in Vietnam (four months).
>
>EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
>Law Enforcement. I voted to cut every law enforcement, CIA and defense bill
>in my career as a U.S. Senator. I ordered the city of Boston to remove a
>fire hydrant in front of my mansion, thereby endangering my neighbors in
>the event of fire. I served in Vietnam (four months).
>
>MILITARY:
>I served in Vietnam (four months). I used three minor injuries to get an
>early discharge from the military and service in Vietnam (as documented by
>the attending doctor). I served in Vietnam (four months). I then returned
>to the U.S., joined Jane Fonda in protesting the war, and insulted
>returning Vietnam vets, claiming they committed atrocities and were baby
>killers. I served in Vietnam (four months). I threw my medals, ribbons, or
>something away in protest. Or did I? My book; Vietnam Veterans Against the
>War: The New Soldier shows how I truly feel about the military. I served in
>Vietnam (four months).
>
>COLLEGE:
>I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. Unlike my
>counterpart George Bush, I have no higher education and did not get
>admitted to Harvard nor graduate with an M.B.A
>
>PAST WORK EXPERIENCE:
>I ran for U.S. Congress and have been there ever since. I have no real
>world experience except marrying rich women and running HJ Heinz
>vicariously through my wife Teresa. I served in Vietnam (four months).
>
>ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
>As a U.S. Senator I set the record for the most liberal voting record,
>exceeding even Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. I have consistently failed
>to support our military and CIA by voting against budgets, thus gutting our
>country's ability to defend itself. Although I voted for the Iraq War, now
>I am against it and refuse to admit that I voted for it. I voted for every
>liberal piece of legislation. I have no plan to help this country but I
>intend to raise taxes significantly if I am elected. I served in Vietnam
>(four months).
>
>My wealth so far exceeds that of my counterpart, George Bush, that he will
>never catch up. I make no or little charitable contributions and have never
>agreed to pay any voluntary excess taxes in Massachusetts, despite family
>wealth in excess of $ 700 million. I served in Vietnam (four months).
>
>I (we) own 28 manufacturing plants (Heinz) outside of the U.S. in places
>like Asia, Mexico and Europe. We can make more profit from the cheaper cost
>of labor in those Countries, although I blame George Bush for sending all
>of the jobs out of Country. I served in Vietnam (four months).
>
>Although I claim to be in favor of alternative energy sources, Ted Kennedy
>and I oppose windmills off Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard as it might
>spoil our view of the ocean as we cruise on our yachts. I served in Vietnam
>(four months).
>
>RECORDS AND REFERENCES:

>I own several "Large" SUVs including one parked at my Nantucket summer
>mansion, though I am against large polluting inefficient vehicles and blame
>George Bush for the energy problems.
>
>I served in Vietnam (four months).

This might be a dumb comment, but it's me so nobody should be surprised:D.

Who the hell wants to deal with all the stress of being President of the USA? That's a big job man. Don't get me wrong! It's awesome and I have the utmost respect for the office. I'm sure most of the candidates throughout history have believed they could make a difference and change things for the better.

It's just that with the way things are today (terrorism, Middle East, etc.), you are going to piss off SOMEBODY. Somebody somewhere is going to want to kill you or your kids or their kids or their kids, kids (you get my point). Bush is already marked for life. He has been since his father was President.

I just don't get Kerry's motivation. Since there has been all this discussion on here, I have looked into it a little bit and he doesn't seem to stand for anything. He doesn't even seem to have a solid agenda....other than "I'm not George Bush".

it's just that if i had his money *cough* i mean his WIFE'S money. i would just say "fvck everybody" and go live it up. Nobody would ever see me again. Who wants to deal with all the bull$hit like the Middle East?!? Let someone else do it.

well then we might as well bring back succesion of kings, because if the common man has no chance at being president, this country would blow balls. You are saying a family member must be in politics in order for their offspring to be in politics, that makes no sense. My family has never held a political office, but someday I want to be in the upper levels of our nations government but according to you, I can't because I haven't been "marked for life", that was a HORRIBLE reason to vote for Bush. I am glad you cannot vote here.

Don't want Kerry running this country if he was an anti-american protester contesting to committing war crimes to give American soldiers a bad rep. I'm commissioning in 6 months as an officer and want to have a job to go to...no matter who's president, I still run the possibility of going to Iraq. I DO trust Bush as commander in chief over Kerry on that one.

Granted Bush got us into this war, there's one less bad regime out there...at some time or another, all the evil in the world will have to go...

Its funny how the news media (mostly liberal) portray's American soldiers as Bush haters and showing soldiers complaining about having to fight a senseless war... but yet thus far EVERY American soldier that has posted on this board supports Bush and the removal of Hussein... we all know that theirs speculation as to some of the motivating factors for justifying it, but ultimately everyone (but Kerry supporters) agree that in the end we have, and are, doing the right thing.

It also seems that the vast majority of Kerry supporters are ONLY supporting Kerry because their against the war.

Actually I support Kerry for that reason and his views on abortion, gay marraige, and tax cuts. And most of the Kerry supporters I know (ie college students) are for him because of pell grants and such.
EDIT: I have never seen the media portray the soldiers as Bush haters, guess I don't watch CBS, yes it is good Saddam is gone, no that is not the reason we went to Iraq, whether we did the right thing is debateable

I dont hate them what so ever. I have a gay uncle and love him just as much as all the other uncles I have. But when it comes to picking up a weapon and killing a man that is about to kill me or him just isnt going to happen! They dont even understand the meaning of a fist fight and you expect me to work hand in hand with one in a war time situation??? I think not! I know it isnt as easy for a civilian to understand because 98% of civilians have never been given an order to kill... I have and it isnt easy for the toughest of the tough. I dont think they would perform well under any harsh living conditions either. Just my thoughts.

Granted Bush got us into this war, there's one less bad regime out there...at some time or another, all the evil in the world will have to go...

actually there is the same amount of bad regimes, we exchanged a terrible iraqi regime for a terrible american regime (bush admin)

That doesn't even make any sense? Bush's administration is not the government over there. The Iraqi people were allowed to vote for their leaders instead of being shot for disapproving their current leader, think that's evil? Our military occupation allows that democratic government to exist, but if we pull out now they'll have a civil war. I'm ABSOLUTELY SURE the people of Iraq would want their current government over Saddam Loyalists...sorry, but I believe Juggy when he says your statements aren't intelligent. It's just blind hate partisan politics with no actual consistency.

Remember about 12 years ago in Ft Campbell... that homo that was killed with a baseball bat because he hit on one of the soldiers? There would be a lot more of that if Kerry is in office and letting fags join our ranks!!!

are racist too, how can you fight with them nig*ers next to you, and di you hear they let jews join the military? aren't they inferior, Mr. unaccepting? oh wait let's fast foreward to 2004, and let's be accepting of everyone. I have known many gay people men and women, and none of them stared me down or checked me out, they were genuinely good people, better than a lot of people here. I am not gay, but they are still people and they want to be happy.

We currently allow gays to be in the military. It's a don't ask, don't tell policy. You can't go around on base flirting with all the girls b/c of all the sexual harrasment crap they have going around, so why should gays be allowed to flirt with guys who really don't want to be a part of it? France, Germany, and the US are the only nations that allow gays in the military. The rest of the world still shuns them...I wonder why that is?

JD-- I find you to be cool as hell, but god DAMN you are so ****in ignorant when it comes to homosexuals. I know quite a few people who are openly gay and they DO NOT try to turn straight guys, they don't hit on guys they know are straight, and most of the time they don't approach a guy they find attractive because most men have mindsets like you. Do NOT categorize all gay people based on one situation.

It's really sad that the "heroes" of our country are so closeminded and act like total assholes when homosexuals want to join the military. They are no less American than you and I... so why treat them so differently?

I hate the closemindedness of this country toward gay people. Although we may not agree with it, atleast give them the same f*cking freedoms we share.

jeez, you ppl get way off topic. posts like this are stupid and extremely partisan, and there is no point to them except to start arguments. any idiot can write something like that about bush or kerry. here's another for you from the other side:
Job application from George W Bush

This individual seeks an executive position. He will be available next January, and is willing to relocate. For details, click on ‘Full story’.

GEORGE W. BUSH

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

Washington, DC 20520

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Law Enforcement:

Ø I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under
the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver’s
license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been “lost” and is not available.

Military:

Ø I joined the Texas Air National Guard. I refused to
take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the
Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

College:

Ø I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader.

Past Work Experience:

Ø I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in the oil
business in Midland, Texas, in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn’t
find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my
stock. I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that
took land using taxpayer money. With the help of my father and our friends
in the oil industry (including Enron CEO Ken Lay), I was elected governor of Texas.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS:

- I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies,
making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston
replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America.

- I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of
billions in borrowed money.

- I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history.

- With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my
father’s appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President after losing
by over 500,000 votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:

- I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.

- I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week.

- I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.

- I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history.

- I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.

- I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.

- I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of
the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans
lost their jobs and that trend continues every month.

- I’m proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any
administration in U.S. history. My “poorest millionaire,” Condoleeza Rice,
has a Chevron oil tanker named after her.

- I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President.

- I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations.

- My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. History, Enron.

- My political party used Enron private jets and corporate
attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.

- I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against
investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating
the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the
biggest corporate rip-offs in history. I presided over the biggest energy
crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.

- I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history.

- I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.

- I appointed more convicted criminals to administration than any President in U.S. history.

- I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States government.

- I’ve broken more international treaties than any President in U.S. history.

- I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United
Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission.

- I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law.

- I refused to allow inspector’s access to U.S. “prisoners of war”
detainees and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention.

- I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations
election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. election).

- I set the record for fewest numbers of press conferences of any
President since the advent of television.

- I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any
one-year period. After taking off the entire month of August, I presided
over the worst security failure in U.S. history.

- I garnered the most sympathy ever for the U.S. after the World
Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated
country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

- I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to
simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering
the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind.

- I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked,
pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did
so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. citizens,
and the world community.

- I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a
cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families in wartime.

- In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for
attacking Iraq and then blamed the lies on our British friends.

- I am the first President in history to have a majority of
Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security.

- I am supporting development of a nuclear “Tactical Bunker Buster,” a WMD.

- I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden to justice.

RECORDS AND REFERENCES:

-All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my
father’s library, sealed and unavailable for public view.

- All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my
bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.

- All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my
Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in
secrecy and unavailable for public review.

Holy cow, I leave a post alone for ONE day, and it turns into 5 pages?! Well I really wish I had the time to go into everything I wanted to, but I'll have to keep this one short. (only 5,000 words, instead of my usual 10k. ;)

To XXRocksXX, you have to be a little more forgiving with us old war horses too. Being in the U.S. military takes a certain type of person. As America gets fatter, richer, and more peaceful, it's the soldiers who need to be vigilant and keep a steady gaze over our oceans. Believe me when I say it would be a BAD bad bad bad bad thing for us to want our military to change with the times. War is cold, and heartless, brutal, and above all things OLD. It's been around as long as mankind, and it's never changed. Not in thought, not in execution, not in goal. We don't need people out there who want to talk things through, or think of a better way, or wonder if they're doing the right thing by killing another person. You want a guy with a soldiers mentality, not a college hippies mentality. I'm not hating on your opinion, and I know that you feel the way you do for good reason. A noble reason. But the world is a big dangerous place sweetie. Don't force your defenders to put up with things that break down the unity and cohesion. Don't force us to be NEW, and expect us to do the old.

To Saleen... I see our conversations have had a positive impact in your debate skillz. You took it back down again, but I saw the thinking process there for a minute!! GJ.

To Xyzenzy.... I could take your post apart bullet by bullet, but that would take WAY too long. But I would like to say that it was very well put together. It's a rare thing to see an anti-Bush item that has had much thought put into it. I think the author shot himself in the foot on a few of his points though. All the talk about high gas prices, law suits, foreclosures, ect ect ect..... Those items have all been on the rise since the beginning of the world. The same things will be able to be said about the next president, and then the next one, and the next one after that. It's just a fact of life. While numerically this is "The worst recession ever," in actuality it's been the shallowest. Can anybody here honestly look at me with a straight face and say that this has been worse than the Great Depression?! That's just lunacy to even think it. There was more money in our system now, and $1 dollar now buys $1,000 dollars back then..... LOL I said I wouldn't go into all this, so I'm going to stop now. For the record again though, there are things in that post that are good speaking points too. LOL And the Houston smog taking over L.A. smog shouldn't be blamed on the G.W.B. , but the C.A.R.B. LOL PITA as they are, they really have cleaned up the air out here.

To Saleens new sig.... The car's going retro, so I think a retro hood would top it off nicely. Say a 1" cowl, a half inch wider than usual.... Very sharp!

I've got to sign off now, but hopefully we'll get to continue this at a later time..... :)

Thats a blindsided comment Saleen, if we don't stop the terrorists where they THRIVE, were just gonna continue to be attacked. Would you rather the war be in the US or overseas? Make no mistake about it, there is a war going on and if we don't stand up and stomp a mudhole in those fukers asses then were gonna be fighting off suicide bombers over here.

I don't mean to all out stop the war on terror (which for the record is a COMPLETElY different war than the war in Iraq), but John Kerry will fight a better war, a war with victory and eventually peace in mind. So the war will be cheaper with lest waste, and more things getting done. That will free up a couple hundred million being wasted. whats the best security our nation can have? close the damn borders, a mexican with a nuke could just stroll across the border and detonate in Houston (god forbid).

dude, just shut the **** up. you have nothing to base your blind hate of bush off just like kerry has nothing to base his campaign off. why doesn't your ass run the ****in powerhouse of the world and try and be under that much pressure. ever notice how every president ever that had dark hair when he went into office came out with grey hair? there's a reason...cause it's not an easy job. so how bout quit acting like it is.

what about Ronny? That dude had jet black hair till the day he died :D

seriously though, the jugman is right.... this is what i was talking about earlier. i wouldn't want the job. it's super stressful and your whole family and their families are in grave danger. that's why politicians never do anything. they just sit on the fence. good old Georgie is kickin some a$$ and taking some names WOOT! It takes some pretty big stones to make a stand and do something. All you have to do is look on here to see the kind of whining he must have to put up with. it must be very discouraging.

WTF happened to supporting your leader?!? All this imbalance must give the terrorists some hope.

I don't get why Kerry would want to do the job anyway. If he gets in, you can count on some terrorists blowing up some ketchup factories....unless he thinks he can kiss all their a$$es and make them all happy. good luck pal. Those muther fukkers are nuts.

As America gets fatter, richer, and more peaceful, it's the soldiers who need to be vigilant and keep a steady gaze over our oceans. Believe me when I say it would be a BAD bad bad bad bad thing for us to want our military to change with the times.

That's what happened here. We let it slip just a little bit at a time. Not enough that anyone would even notice. We were being "modern" and "liberal" and "civilized".....then BOOM....all of a sudden we're borrowing parts for our CF-18s, our 40 year old Sea King helicopters are crashing on the decks of our rusty ships and we're buying used subs from the Brits that catch on fire and kill our soldiers.

Don't let this happen to you!!!!!!

Support your troops. Support your President.

I dont understand how you can express personal views on something you never participated in! Thats like me saying Lamborghini's suck @$$ even though I have never driven one. If you have such great ideas on how to save money on this war then why arent you in the campaign for senate or even President?

So far this was has been a victory and IF you could get off your liberal ass and actually go there and see how happy the people are now you would understand. But while you are here bragging about the freedoms you enjoy and speaking the opinions that you are so free to speak, there are other countries out there like North Korea where people are dying every day from starvation and disease's that you have never heard of... yet their leaders are in great health and eat well every day.

No matter what you do, there is no such thing as a cheap war! But you can thank Bush for the economy and how its striving right now because war is good for only two things and thats economical stimulation and the ability to free a once torn nation. I know how easy it is to sit back with all your freedoms and say we shouldnt have gone and how wrong it is to have went to war... but on the other side of the world you have one of the most greatful FREE nations thanking us for what we have done for them. Iraq is now a self govorned country now and will be a great allie and probably the only democracy in the middle of many nations that are run by tyrants. So keep believing Kerry will save the world and when we get attacked again and he takes no action (just like Clinton) then come back and tell me how you feel!

Make no mistake about it, there is a war going on and if we don't stand up and stomp a mudhole in those fukers asses then were gonna be fighting off suicide bombers over here.

That's the key right there.

I think some of the confusion comes from the question "why Iraq?" when there are so many other "evil regimes" out there.

That's the question that gets asked here all the time. Then people start to think it's a personal motivation on the part of President Bush....or it's motivated by his oil interests.

The answer is simple....why NOT Iraq?!?!

MD said it. There IS a war going on. Something needs to be done and you gotta start somewhere.

Saddam was so "in your face" with everything he did. He acted like he was untouchable, which was an inspiration (for lack of a better word) to the other "evil regimes" out there. He was a logical first target.

All the bleeding hearts seem to forget - These are not reasonable, decent people we are talking about. Who the fvck blows themselves up?!?! or flies a plane full of innocent people into a building full of innocent people?!?! How do you reason with that kind of mentality?!? How do you find peace?!?! All they understand is violence and force.

true that, I think every political thread has had the exact same arguments, they don't change, I am sick of posting the same stuff and reading the same replies. I am also sick of personal attacks for having a minority opinion. I will never win a political debate on here because I am so outnumbered, I may offer counter facts, but somehow they always get lost. Xyzenzy

I think people end up using ad hominem attacks because they feel that they are right. they believe in their side, and they don't understand why others can't see that their side is right. they don't bother to think about other people's points of view, or the things that others have been through/seen that might have changed how they see the world.

so instead of a logical debate, you get people trying to convince each other that their side is right. then when they realize they can't do that, they get nasty and personal.

But you will never experience a war time situation so you never will be able to complete that mission. See... its easy for a woman to say what you are saying because most lesbians are bull dikes and try to be tuff like a man where most homo's turn to a life of sissyfied little girls. This is definetly not who I want defending me what so ever when the bullets are flying. I never said they are any less american than you and I. They are just not cut out for a job like the military!

P.S. Im not being closed minded either... just applying a little common sense where commom sense is hardly common anymore!

But not all gay men are like that! That's the point I'm trying to make.

I understand that you know what kinda man it takes to be in the military or whatever, but there are some gay men who are just as strong, even stronger than straight men... I think homosexuals should be allowed in, even if they don't go on the frontlines, couldn't you settle for them being cooks, maintenence... etc?

I agree with the first thing you said. No steriotype fits all examples. My dad's youngest brother is gay, and he's probably the best fighter I've ever met. He's such a man's man, that I only found out he was gay like 3 years ago.

The second thing you said though can never work. It's been tried many times, in many countries. (Including this one) It may start that way, but then it would become a civil rights issue. As it eventually will anyway. It has to be all or nothing. I know it doesn't seem fair to you. Hell, I think it's not fair too. But the fact is, that the introduction of a forign and unacceptable way of life into something like the military will only weaken it. Moral will go down. Unit integrity will collapse. Ect ect.... I've seen it. 1 gay guy can affect a shop of 30 people. And that's with Don't ask, don't tell in place. So in closing, I agree with you completely that it is not fair. And it isn't. But life isn't fair, and nowhere is it written that life is fair. We have to do what's right, even if it makes a small percentage of people sad. Do I think less of you for your views? .... Of course not!! I actually admire their origins. BUT, someday you'll share a similar view as most of us. It's more important to maintain the whole, than it is to apease a special interest.

Xyzenzy
10-28-2004, 05:27 AM
I agree. There's just something disgusting about gay men to straight men, moreso than lesbians are disgusting to most females. Gay men in a unit take away from the cohesiveness and function of a military atmosphere, and really, unless you're gonna have an all-gay unit (oh i can just see that...flowers painted on the tanks, haha), it just wouldn't work right.

Exactly.

It's really sad that many people in our country are so closeminded. Differences in people shouldn't be scary, they should teach us lessons and we should be accepting of people's lifestyles.

God forbid that happen in America- the land of the free, though.

this is for Saleen as well as others. Note, this guy is a college professor( that makes him an expert)

This was in the Daily Record (Ellensburg's paper) on Wed. Oct. 6, 2004. It was written by Mathew (only one t) Manweller who is a Central Washington University political science professor. The title of the article was "Election determines fate of nation." "In that this will be my last column before the presidential election there will be no sarcasm, no attempts at witty repartee. The topic is too serious, and the stakes are too high. This November we will vote in the only election during our lifetime that will truly matter. Because America is at a once-in-a-generation crossroads, more than an election hangs in the balance. Down one path lies retreat, abdication and a reign of ambivalence. Down the other lies a nation that is aware of its past and accepts the daunting obligation its future demands. If we choose poorly, the consequences will echo through the next 50 years of history. If we, in a spasm of frustration, turn out the current occupant of the White House, the message to the world and ourselves will be twofold. First, we will reject the notion that America can do big things. Once a nation that tamed a frontier, stood down the Nazis and stood upon the moon, we will announce to the world that bringing democracy to the Middle East is too big of a task for us. But more significantly, we will signal to future presidents that as voters, we are unwilling to tackle difficult challenges, preferring caution to boldness, embracing the mediocrity that has characterized other civilizations. The defeat of President Bush will send a chilling message to future presidents who may need to make difficult, yet unpopular decisions. America has always been a nation that rises to the demands of history regardless of the costs or appeal. If we turn away from that legacy, we turn away from who we are. Second, we inform every terrorist organization on the globe that the lesson of Somalia was well learned. In Somalia we showed terrorists that you don't need to defeat America on the battlefield when you can defeat them in the newsroom. They learned that a wounded America can become a defeated America. Twenty-four-hour news stations and daily tracing polls will do the heavy lifting, turning a cut into a fatal blow. Except that Iraq is Somalia times 10. The election of John Kerry will serve notice to every terrorist in every cave that the soft underbelly of American power is the timidity of American voters. Terrorists will know that a steady stream of grizzly photos for CNN is all you need to break the will of the American people. Our own self-doubt will take it from there. Bin Laden will recognize that he can topple any American administration without setting foot on the homeland. It is said that America's WWII generation is its 'greatest generation.' But my greatest fear is that it will become known as America's 'last generation.' Born in the bleakness of the Great Depression and hardened in the fire of WW II, they may be the last American generation that understands the meaning of duty, honor and sacrifice. It is difficult to admit, but I know these terms are spoken with only hollow detachment by many (but not all) in my generation. Too many citizens today mistake 'living in America' as 'being an American.' But America has always been more of an idea than a place. When you sign on, you do more than buy real estate. You accept a set of values and responsibilities. This November, my generation, which has been absent too long, must grasp the obligation that comes with being an American, or fade into the oblivion they may deserve. I believe that 100 years from now historians will look back at the election of 2004 and see it as the decisive election of our century. Depending on the outcome, they will describe it as the moment America joined the ranks of ordinary nations; or they will describe it as the moment the prodigal sons and daughters of the greatest generation accepted their burden as caretakers of the City on the Hill." Mathew Manweller
