351w vs STI?
Okay me and my friend were arguing about a subaru impreza sti, i said that when i finish my 67 stang next year in april i would be able to mop up a sti..., he said he was going to rent one but i dont think you can rent sti's, so would a 67 stang w/ a 351w in it pullin about 420 ponies be able to beat a sti, and if not would it be able to beat just a impreza? (both stock) <IMG src=smileys/smiley29.gif border="0">

What kind of race are you talking about?
STi = 300hp/300ft-lbs and about 3200lbs.
351 would have a lot more power, plus it'd be N/A (right?) so it's even more useable power. I don't know what the weight would be on your '67.
It all depends on what kind of race, tires, gearing, etc. If you go out and try to cook him in an autocross I think you'll get stomped. STi's handle really well.
Sport Compact Car did a comparison between the STi and three modified 2002/03 WRXs. Vishnu tuning brought a WRX in on R-compound tires and with somewhere in the neighborhood of $8000 in modifications (bringing the total investment up to about $32k) and it beat the STi in every category except braking, which they tied. That should tell you something about the STi... stock tires it was able to stop as well as a modified wrx w/ bbk and racing compound tires.
The other two WRXs went different ways with their mods, one guy spend $50k+ and the other spent less, and I think they both got waxed.
If you're talking about a simple 1/4 mile drag race and your car doesn't weigh too much more, you've got decent gearing, and good tires, then you should be able to win. But the STi has a launching advantage with the AWD, so you've got to be able to drive it.
And the STi isn't going to show up in any rental fleets for a while, except perhaps those exotic rental places where you can get Ferraris maybe.

it's not that they wouldnt rent out a turbo car, the STI is a limited production car, and like any other car of that nature, dealers have first dibs and are snatching them all up. it's possible for an exotic rental company to rent one out, but not likely they'd get one right out of the factory.

There are supposedly only around 5000 STis being sold here this year. But then again there were only going to be 15,000 WRXs sold fo 2002, and they ended the year with something like 22,000 sold. There have been waiting lists for the STi for a long time. The funny part is that even though there were dozens of people on the list at most of the dealers (around here anyway) you can still walk in and pick one up every now and again. It seems that a lot of people put themselves on the list and then realized they can't afford it.
