Default Auto Trans slams into drive or reverse

I recently purchased a 1992 Mustang LX Convertible with a 4 cylinder and auto trans....the car is in really nice shape and runs very well. I really enjoy it as a daily driver.

The only issue the car has is with the automatic transmission...when I first start it up, even on a warm day, it slams into gear rather than simply going into gear. Reverse is much worse than Drive.

I changed the fluid and filter using Valvoline Mercon V ATF. I had also installed a drain plug (since I can't drain the converter) in the transmssion pan...unfortunately the car set a few weeks, I did not have the drain plug tight and 3 quarts of ATF leaked on to the floor...my fault.

So, I fixed the leak, and added a bottle of LUCAS Transmission fix-it "stuff"...really thick and gooey, actually, and topped it off with more Mercon V.

It still slams into gear, but it is a little better. This morning it was 15 degrees out and it went into drive much better...I was surprised. Reverse is still an issue.

Short of a rebuilt, does anyone heave any suggestions??? The car has about 100,000 miles on it and it sat a long time (couple of years) before I bought it....thanks in advance.

Other than slamming into gear, does it run ok?

Just a thought, but is it possible that the previous owner put a shift kit in it? The cars ive had shift kits in always went into gear hard.

Well I doubt many people would put a shift kit into a 4-banger lol

Are the U joints fine? Do you know the clunk is tranny related? Maybe no choice but to get it rebuilt, if one of those miracle fluids didn't fix the problem

Are the 4cyl trannies TV cable (throttle valve) controlled like the AOD's? It could be that the pressure is too high and cause it to slam. Also, like someone else asked, what are the RPM's when youre shifting into gear? If theyre too high even if theres nothing wrong itll slam.

Man, thats not a completely crazy idea. I've seen a lot dumber **** than a shift kit on a 4 banger.
