Default timing

i have a 1996 4.6 stang how many different ways can the timing belt jump and is it common?

I believe all the modular engines have timing chains and not belts

ok its a chain but it runs as if it were way out of time. ran so so when i took it to the shop went back for the car ran like crap mech. said it ran that way when it got there (thats B.S.) sputers pops. thing is he was suposed to check the trani. thats it. he says i need new engine
