Default Rear axle housing mis-aligned?

Hi, I am new to his forum. I ran some searches but came up blank, hence this post....

I have an '88 GT convertible that I am considering building into a more brisk performer, but at the moment I am unsure if this car is worthy of further investment. The car has 175,000 miles and the original engine is about out of breath, but the bady, interior and general condition are pretty good, no rust.

Here's my dilimma:
The right rear wheel sits a little bit back toward the rear of the wheel well, the left side looks ok, but the car seems to drive and handle ok, and no weird tire wear. I took it to an alignment guy to have it assessed, in case it had been hit and was un-repairable. He tells me the front end had been adjusted to compensate for the rear being out of line, and that rear axle housing needs to be re-hung and aligned. From what I've seen it doesn't appear there is very much adjustability of the rear control arms etc, and that you would be pretty much stuck with wherever the suspension pickup points are.

Any opinions or experience here among you that can guide me?? Thanks much....

Scott

I would go and get new upper and lower control arms. Usualy they come with new bushings. While you are under there you may consider new shocks and springs.

Actually, I have all of those parts sitting in my garage along with a nice set of '02 GT wheels/tires. Trying to decide if putting them on will actually fix the problem..! The alignment dude measured a +44 on the right rear, and -33 on the left rear. He thinks the car was hit hard sometime in the past....

You have a car that is "dog tracking" that's when the rear wheels don't line up with the front wheels

That's normally caused by an accident (t-bone).
