Need advise on removing the CAT's
I'm not very mechanical, but I love my 06 GT. I took off the stock exhaust and put on some Flowmaster 14710's. I'd love to get a real exhaust upgrade, but it's not in the budget right now. I'm told removing the Cats will help. If that's true, what do I need and how difficult is the process?
My father in law is the car guy in the family to help me, but he's a Corvette guy and doesn't know much about Mustangs.

You will most likely lose some low end torque by removing the cats, you can run an offroad pipe and get someMIL eliminators to keep the check engine light offif that's the route you go.

You can get some high flow cats.

I have a Bassani X-pipe w/cats and it sounds good. It's not loud until you get on the gas so every cop you see isn't following you around waiting for an excuse to paper you.The cats on the X-pipe look like some of the ones sold by Jegs and Summit. The off road pipes are louder but have a "hollow" sound. There is probably an HP increase to be had with an off-road setup over a catted pipe but I'm sure it's minimal and I can live with it.
If you decide to use high flow cats on a stock system you want to think about the size of the aftermarket pipe. This way you can buy adapters to fit into the stock pipe size and remove the adapters when the aftermarket pipe goes in.
To keep from having so many joints in the pipe, and a cleaner looking system,I'd wait until you get the money to buy a one-piece exhaust.

Where do you live? Removing the cats might make your car fail emissions testing. And besides, removing them will give little (if any) extra horsepower.
