My Haynes manual for Mustang/Capri fox says that the possible autos are:
C3, C4, C5, AOD, A4LD
Yours looks like a 3 speed so no AOD no A4LD
It looks most like a C4.....but......
Wikipedia says:
was a three-speed, medium-duty automatic transmission introduced in the 1964 model year and produced through 1986.
ok 1986 looks good ... yet C4 came in mustang
1965–1981 Ford Mustang
Based on that you might have a C5
C5:
The C4 was replaced in 1982 by the C5, which was essentially a improved C4 with a lock-up clutch in the torque converter to improve highway fuel economy. The C5 was phased out in 1986, replaced by the AOD.
You might have a pre-phased-out carryover C5
Or someone simply installed a C4
give us numbers to go by: casting numbers or a plate or something... when you find the #'s look to this
* 64-83 (now designated "C4" by Ford)
o Case fill {C4 to C9, D0 to D9, & E1SP)
o Pan fill {C5 to C9, D0 to D9}
* 82-86 (now designated "C5" by Ford)
o Case fill {E2AP only)
o Pan fill {E2TP only}
good luck

It is a c5. The way to tell is to pull the bellhousing off and measure the depth of it. It should be something like 7 1/8 inch or so ( I don't remember exactly but I know its just over 7). If it is stock and you are positive it is the original then yes it is a c5 with no doubt.
