Whining coming from shifter or tranny?

I pulled down the boot on the shifter. It's steel-colored and says Ford on it.
Just to reiterate/add info, the whining noise is most easily heard in 4th gear, which changes to a higher-pitched slight buzzing or hissing noise in 5th. Taking my foot off the gas or pressing the clutch pedal causes the noise to go away.
I'm stumped
