215 degrees on a 428 engine to hot?
I think I have much of the cooling issues resolved! but I still think it's running a bit hot? I get up to 215 degrees on the fwy about 70mph today the temp was about 92 degrees outside. At idel it keeps about 185 degrees. But the fwy speed has me concerned, 215 seems still a bit high to me?
Also a distributor timing question! my cam is set at 3 degrees advanced, and I was running distributor at 14 degrees, I backed it off down to 10 degrees, I am wondering if this is causing the engine to run hotter or cooler, also getting some after run when I shut down the car at about 210-215. Very unsure if I should run more or less timing to keep the engine cooler?

I guess you got your fans running the right way. That's good. I think 215 is hot for any engine especially at highway speeds. I would expect it to run hotter at idle than at 70 mph. What temp thermostat do you have? As for timing I have no clue, I have no experience with anything but newer engines. Sorry

What is the total amount of advance you are running? You said you put down to 10 degrees but how much do you have including the mechanical advance? If you run hot on the freeway that tells me that not enough air is moving throughthe radiator, I really would like to see some picks of everthing to get a better idea.

What do you have electrics or a flex fan?Like JD said it must be an air movement problem because on the highway it should run cooler.215 can be exceptable but for maximum performance it should be a little lower.

I believe the mechanical is set at 3 derees advanced, also the inner fan has no shroud! that could be making a difference

Next time you check your timing do this. 1. plug your vacume advance (if you have it) 2. check the timing at idle 3. rev the car to about 3-3500 rpm and check the timing at that RPM, it should be anywhere from 28-38 degrees, this is what is know as your total timing.

On a newer car thats not bad, but on an older vehicle thats too hot. It is usually within range for a newer car for optimal performance, but with older you are also being robbed of HP at those temps. I will send an email to my brother and see if he knows what it could be. He is a muscle car restorer and usually deals with big blocks. I will get back with you.
