Gas Mileage

RE: Gas Mileage
I went 30+ miles once in my 00 sixer before I got scared to go any further.
Here's an idea: fill up a 2-5 gallon gas can and put it in your trunk when you get below 1/8th. When your low fuel light comes on, hit your trip meter. Tool around like normal until you run out and see how far you went. Put the gas in the trunk in the tank and then go fill up.
Be sure to let us know!

RE: Gas Mileage
As a rule of thumb, on most american and european cars there is a 50 miles you can go after the light comes up.
Fill up right after light comes up, you'd have about 4 gallons left. That's 4x20 = 60 miles. All that light really tells you is to take it easy on the gas. Light comes up, shift early, use brakes instead of gear, shift into neutral on the turns, draft behind big trucks, neutral from a hill, don't idle on lights, and I bet you could squize 100 miles out of it.

RE: Gas Mileage
I have a 00 V6 and I went about 50+ miles with the low fuel light on before I found a gas station that wasn't charging over 2.60 for gas. And I still had about half a gallon left after filling it up.

RE: Gas Mileage
my gt has roughly 2 gallons in the tank when the light goes on. You don't have to drive your car until it runs out of gas. the 99-04 GT's (maybe v6ers too, I dunno) have a 15.7 gallon tank. Drive until the low fuel light goes on, then go fill up the tank all the way. little bit of math and you can figure out how much was left in the tank.

I think ford always standardized on 5 gallons when the light comes on. My 93 LX was 5 gallons, my 97 F150 was 5 gallons, and my 2005 seems to start beeping at me with 75 gallons left - and the car gets about 15 mpg.

If you hold the trip meter reset (for the mustangs, and all ford vehicles, with the digital odometer) when you start the car, or just turn the ignition to the run position, it will do a gauge test, and you can keep pressing the reset button and it will go through a bunch of things that are monitored by the car's computer... speedometer, tach, and one of them is fuel level. I'm not exactly sure what it is measured in, when my tank is full (04 GT) it reads at about 210, 1/2 a tank reads about 110-120, and my low fuel light came on at 40-50. When it read around 30, my gauge read flat on the red line of E... so this can give you an idea of pretty much exactly when you're flat out of gas.
