My best friend put away his fiance's 08 Jetta last year without doing any real maintenance before going into storage. Now they're trying to start it up and the car is hesitating/misfiring, the check engine light came on and the exhaust smells bad. I'm thinking its bad gas since it sat with half a tank for over a year without fuel stabilizer.

Have any of you ever siphoned gas out of the tank? If so what pump did you use?

Is there a drain plug? Most newer cars have an anti siphon filler neck.

I've stored cars without fuel stabilizer for 2 years and the fuel did not go bad.

You could try the old hose and sucking method. Just dont let it get in your mouth. LIke stated above most newer cars have the anti siphon filler neck.

Actually, it turned out not to be the gas but the battery. It wasn't giving a strong spark causing the car to run like crap. We changed it out for a new one and it worked great.
