I have a 1993 ford mustang LX i just bought last week and i just noticed that you can plug it in but the car is gas not diesel.. It was really cold this morning and wouldnt start but i tried pluging in the cord and it started right up. can anyone tell me what this is for? As this is a gas car not diesel.

Could be to warm up your oil. Where does the plug go to?

It would just be a heater for the coolant, to allow for quicker warm-ups on cold mornings i.e. a block heater. There are several different varieties - in place of a freeze plug, in-line with a hose or stuck to the oil pan to heat the oil. It is probably not factory, but could be dealer installed or aftermarket.

Why do i need it to warm up faster or to even start it? gas engines shouldnt need it to start up in the cold like diesel engines???

IF your block heater is plugged in your car will warm up faster which means you will have heat faster

You don't NEED to use it - some people just like quicker heat when it's cold out or need to defrost a window or something. Forget about it if you aren't interested in using it.

If you live in a cold climate, it can be a valuable feature to have. It may also warm the oil to help for better lubrication during cold start ups.
