Default Stolen stereo, Dashboard illumination lights no longer working

Hi everyone. I recently purchased my first mustang (2000) and am trying to troubleshoot a problem I'm having with the dashboard illumination lights. The check engine, battery, seatbelt, etc.. Lights are working just not the ones behind the gauges. Now I've read in a couple of other threads pertaining to stereo installation that messing with an orange wire can cause the dash lights to malfunction. I'm thinking that something might have happened when the wires were cut for the stereo removal? I checked the fuses and couldn't seem to find anything wrong.. But I'm new to the electrical aspect of cars so what would I know.. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what might be the cause of this let me know! Thanks,
Mike
