Default Rear main seal

Do u guys use rtv silicone when replacing gasket? No? Do put it around the seal before you push it into block? Or do u put it on dry and Put some on the outside after the seal is seating in already?

You dont really NEED it for that type of seal, but sometimes I put on a thin coat on the outer surface before installation. Wont do ya much good after you install the seal tho.

If its a one piece gasket, then I wouldn't. but if its a two piece (or more) gasket I put a little dab of RTV where the pieces of the gaskets meet.

For a rear main seal I would use a light coat of vasoline or oil to help the seal slide in place. I definately would not use rtv.

I wouldn't use a petroleum based product of any kind on the gasket if the gasket is rubber. It will degrade the rubber and cause a leak over time.

The rear main seal is in constant contact with engine oil. How is putting a light coat of vaseline or engine oil around the metal ridge of the seal is going to degrade the seal ?
