Default 2003 Alternator mounting bolts

Just bought a new batter and a new alternator....disconnected the gray snap out connector and the red connector. I have the top mounting bolt loosened by doing the lefty loosey deal...I go to the lower bolt and it won't budge. Am I doing it backwards? Do I need to crank it to the right??? I have the 3.8 V6 engine...will the belt be "free" enough to remove the old alternator and install the new one? The Chilton's manual and Youtube videos aren't helping me....so HELP!!!
