Default 1984 mustang hatchback L?

i picked the car up in ct about 3 years back, it came out of hawaii and somehow traveled its way to the east coast, here is a few odd ball things ive been trying to figure out, one is it really just an L? i ask around an people look at me stupid, two what motor is it supposed to have seeing as though ive got a cali emmisions tag on a 3.8, read the old chiltons manual an it said that only high out put motors or turbocharged ones have the dual fuel pumps one low in tank an high out of tank. makes no sense because ive got both. would like some help breaking down what my car is an if its been hacked an pieced or not, any one with any ideas or what performance upgrades i can do to the cfi 3.8 v6 232, i know the smog pump is gone an egr is blocked? have the vacuums are all sorts of wrong. in general i am going to say please help

Yes, from what I have read, in 1984 there were 5 versions of the Mustang. the L, LX, GT, Turbo GT, and the SVO.

IF you want to know what the original motor is, look for the VIN number. For example 1FABP26A6DF000001, 1FA (Ford) B (restraint system), P (passenger car), 26 (body code), A (engine code) From what I understand the 3.8 V6 is 3. So it may read. 1FABP2636DF and a bunch of other numbers which varies.

I can't help too much with upgrades..

well thank you for that at least, ive been going through an old ford manual for 80-87 from chilton, so far it has some more info in it that i had no idea about, i found a vacuum, wiring schematic on here for an 85 and im hoping it is similar. picked up a haynes manual for it as well, and when all else fails i even have all data now but the hard part is going to figure out what they did before me. theres a couple pieces of wood shoved into hoses off the egr with clamps on it. i dont see a smog pump and the belt tensioner was modified a bit. mounted below instead of above. had an ac compressor but i no longer see it lol
