1990 5.0 GT input bearing help please
I think the input bearing is done on my 1990 5.0. It grinds and has a hard time going into 1/2/3/5 and a small grind but runs fine in 4th (1:1)
Any idea's on how much labour/cost should be involved in getting this changed at a shop?
What else should I have done while they're in there?
i.e how much longer would it take to do the output bearing as well, or seals/synchro's etc.
Any idea's on a fair cost?
Thanks.

I always seem to get over quoted, and not get the right work done.
I had an entire clutch kit put in just over a month ago and I wish I would of known to get the input bearing done while they were in there, now I have to get the whole car torn apart again.
Any quotes/advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I feel your pain brother, but I don't really know what to tell you.
The shop that put a clutch in and didn't replace the bearing should be avoided, obviously. I don't know for sure, but the labor to put the beariing in is probably about the same as putting the clutch in. The difference is the cost of the parts and I don't know what that would be but it would be easy to find out. Parts counter at the Ford dealer can tell you the retail cost on the bearing. Compare that to the itemized receipt you should have gotten with the clutch install.
I'm guessing you are looking at the total you already paid minus the clutch, then add the cost of the bearing.
Seems to me to be a good place to start. Then shop around to a couple of different shops. Maybe someone on the forum could recommend a reliable shop in your area.
Good luck.

I re-read your original post and I see you are also asking about synchros and seals...my suggestion is to do a complete tranny rebuild including the beariings and seals.
YOu can get an idea of the cost by looking up the repair in the flat rate manual. This will tell you the labor in hours it will take to complete the job. Replacing the input bearing can be done while the tranny is out of the car. Ask what a shop charges per hour labor. I think the going rate is about $65 here in NC but haven't a clue what it would be up there.
