5.0 issue..
not a mustang but in a grand marquis. .
ok. background..
90 marquis. was driving down highway and she overheated...bad. steam everywhere. engine actually stalled.. coasted off to side of road and crank but no start, left car there overnight to cool down. went next day and it started. running really rough. drove up road to a parking lot where i preceded to check everything. oil still clean so ruled out headgasket. (i think) went to restart car and it started, ran a minute and stalled. now it will start for a minute, stall and won't start again unless i leave it sit a while. even on starting fluid. i do have spark. but will not start. help?

You cant rule out head gasket , or warped head just because the oil looked good.
'
It takes quite a bit of time for the coolant to mix with the oil. It is not immediate. And they don't always dump coolant into the oil. Sometimes it only dumps into a cylinder and causes a severe miss. You say it over heated bad? How bad?
You also could have warped the lower intake causing a major vacuum leak.
You need to have a compression test done to try and rule out head gasket.

When things get that hot oil tends to burn off and surfaces go dry. Rings get cooked, crank bearings, cam bearings. Its no good lol . I say do a compression test , if the rings got cooked and scored the cylinders it wont run good if at all.
You probly should have pulled over much much sooner.

i pulled over at first spot wide enough.. planning to buy a compression gauge today from harbor frieght and test it out. will post back with numbers.
one question. doesn't the engine have to be operating temp? it won't run long enough to get up to temp..

No you can do a compression test cold. Its done all the time.. you will be looking for any cylinders that are way far off from the rest. For instance if 7 or them are 110-140 psi and 1 is way 50-70 then that is a problem.
