Okay so I just acquired a 66 Mustang Convertible from my mom. She's owned it for over 20 years when we still lived in Cali.
The Title was cali and plates are still Cali. So recently I got the car and my mom has lost the title.
Title was in her name, but california title. We live in Missouri now.

My mom recently went to California and went to the DMV to try to receive another title with the Vin number.
The DMV didnt have any information on the Vin Number (The Vin number falling off the DMV system Im guessing).

So now I'm stuck on what to do to acquire the title.

I would like to keep the mustang in our family so any help on how to go about this would help.

Have you talked to Missouri DMV / DPS to see what the process is where you live now to register it? How long has it been since it was registered in Cali? I don't buy that story about them not having any information on it.

Agree with the above, sounds like somebody at DMV was just lazy.

I know that the original VIN plate is located on the driver side fender in the hood jamb - the one on my '67 is long gone as well. Incorrect as it may be, what is being used as the VIN on my car now is the Warrany Number from the stamped plate riveted to the driver door. I'm not aware of the complete history of my car, but I do know that my dad was able to register and title the car with that info when he acquired it back in 1996.

If you ask around in the Classics section here, I'm sure somebody can help you find the actual VIN, as I'm pretty sure it is stamped into a framerail or something elsewhere on the car, or if that door plate is still there then maybe there's a way to cross reference the info on it.
