Default shift problems

hello all,i just recently purchased a 1989 mustang gt with the aod trans.i am having shifting issues I could use advice with.first of all if I pull it down into regular od it will drive but as soon as I let off the throttle it lets go,same with drive position.if I pull it down to 1 it will shift 1 2 3 pretty quickly even at low throttle but not go into 4th at all. most threads ive seen say its the tv cable. could it be that simple or am I getting my hopes up and it just needs a new transmission. any advice would be welcomed, thanks.

if u put it into the drive position, it wont ever go into 4th, that is basically 3rd gear, not sure what u mean by "when i let off the throttle it lets go"

Your TV cable most likely popped off at the throttle linkage. Check there first, then the connection on the tranny. If both ends are still connected, verify cable is not broke.

Your description of your problem is classic TV cable woes. Don't drive the car till this is fixed, I've heard this will burn up the tranny rather quick if driven.
