Check Engine Light

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Since this occurred I have been contemplating replacing the gas cap, thinking it was the most obvious culprit, the only thing that gives me pause when I run the on board "system check" function, it tells me that the gas cap is "good". I may go ahead and do it anyway.....
Thanks again....

Thanks, jwog666, the detailed response is much appreciated! Unfortunately, I am the only “smoke machine” that I currently have access to, and I am fresh out of “inert fluorescent smoke” so this is looking more and more like an unwanted trip to the dealership.
Is there somewhere that I can find additional information on the “evap system” (i.e. location of the canister, vent valve, hoses, etc,)? The reason I ask is the night before the I noticed the CEL, I inadvertently ran over some form of debris that some jacka$$ discarded in the roadway, and I am wondering if the debris may have cut or otherwise damaged either the canister, or an associated a vacuum line, vent valve, hoses, etc, I am hoping it will be something obvious that I can see via a closer visual inspection. Otherwise, I will need to wait until this weekend to take the car to the dealership, and overpay for repairs.

Ok, so I went ahead and replaced the gas cap on Friday, however after driving all weekend the CEL is still on. I am not sure how many cycles before the CEL turns off, so I cannot say that it did not fix the problem. In speaking with a co-worker this morning I mentioned that I was considering disconnecting the battery to see if I could clear the CEL, however he stated that disconnecting the battery may not clear the code, and that I may need to get ahold of an OBDII device to manually reset the code.
Does anyone know how many cycles are typically needed to re-set the code?

I also managed to squeeze under the rear of the car and visually inspect some of the vacuum lines. There was no visible damage however some of the rubber tubes did feel very dry. Do these lines normally deteriorate to the point of leaking? The car is circa 2006.
