Just bought a 2012 Mustang - how often to change oil?
Hiya! I've heard with newer cars you don't have to change the oil as often. Maybe every 5000 vs. every 3000 miles. Can anyone confirm? Car has 52k miles.

Thanks. I've only put about 2000 miles on it since I bought it in April so the gauge says it still has 70% oil life. Is this gauge accurate? I love the technology on the newer Mustang. My last car was a 2003.

5k is way too soon with full synthetic. You can get 7,500 miles out of normal oil.
If you read your owners manual you would know that your car has a complicate system to track the oil life and will alert you when an oil change is due. Motor oil and motor design has come a long way in the past 50 years. There's people on this forum that change it 10k, or even 20k with full synthetic.

I think its important to check the level of oil often till you get used to your car. The in-car computer will keep track of oil life, you should keep track of oil consumption, which, hopefully will be very little to none.

How do I know what kind of oil is already in there since I bought it from a dealer? I will sit down and read through my manual. I'm on my 5th Mustang so I don't usually read the manuals but I've never had a newer car. I've always been on point with oil changes in the past but with a newer car I know that you don't need to change it as often. Thanks for the tips. I'll check the oil regularly and go off of the gauges since technology has come so far.

Oil life monitor or standard intervals has been a debate among me and my coworkers. As much as I now plan to get several samples of cars that have now had the systems remind them to get the oil changed, and then get that oil tested. Unfortunately I have not done that yet. But what I usually recommend to people now is to change the oil according to the system reminders but only when using quality oil with a quality filter (+ checking it frequently). At the same time though I do get worried when I see people follow the system and the oil is dark and smells very used. But I was told looks can be deceiving.
btw I bought a new car I'd probably change the factory oil oil out within 2000 miles just in case the motor was still breaking in (don't know if that would still be a thing or not).
