Default Butterfly choke stalling car

Have a 1972 mustang 302 stock with Autolite Carb/automatic choke. With car cold, with the butterfly close starts but then after 10-15 seconds stalls. If I open the butterfly it stays idling. What is the problem? What do I need to adjust?

Cbonis72: When the engine is cold and you press the gas a couple of times to close the choke, the choke plate should JUST close. make sure that you don't have to much spring tension on the adjustable choke cap. When you start the car, the choke should open a little as the air is drawn in. When the warm air starts coming up from the exhaust manifold, the heat will warm the spring and relieve the tension and open the choke plate. The best time to adjust the choke cap is on the hottest day of the year. Get it to JUST close and tighten. From there, the choke will close according to air temp, the rest of the year. Mark
