Default Whats a good manual trans to replace stock 4 speed

I have an 82 capri with a nice 351w and the stock trans. I've been told that the stocker won't hold up to any abuse from the 351. So, w/o spending alot of money what would be a good replacement and where would I look? The car isn't going to the track or anything like that. It's not a daily driver either.

Why don't you wait until you break it and then contact American Powertrain or another transmission vendor. Craigslist is also a possibility and there are some Mustang junkyards out there still too.

+1 ^^^

Throw a rebuilt T5 in there. Stay off slicks and 5000 RPM launches and use the clutch for every shift and it'll last longer than the car.

I'm getting ready to drop the trans out of my Capri due to a rear main leaking oil. But, if I take out the 4 spd I'm not putting it back in. I just found this on C.L. Would this work?

99-04 MUSTANG GT T45 5spd Transmission

Yes, it should, but be aware that Ford changed the LENGTH of the input shaft somewhere around early 90s, and no telling until you measure your bell housing depth vs. the input shaft length whether the T-45 will hang up, too long, or fail to enter the crankshaft pilot bearing enough.

The bell housing depth was changed by about 3/4 inch.

So, worst case is I'll have to change bellhousing? I have the stock 4 speed now. Does anyone know the length of the input shaft on that trans? The one I found isn't very far away (and he's asking only $250) so I could go and measure it.

So, I'm seriously getting ready to do this swap. I found this on C.L. I may have to change the input shaft? That seems to be reasonable since I would most likley go thru the trans before putting it in my car.

Or, I fouund this that I could drive home for only a tiny bit more money.

Yes you have to change out the input shaft or get a 94/95 bellhousing for it to work.

You don't want the T5 from that v6 mustang, it is weaker just like the 4cyl T5s.

Depends on the YEAR of the 5-speed chosen. If '93 or earlier, old bell housing. If '94-95 (later unknown), deeper bell, need 5-speed with longer input shaft. Failure to comply (use older trans), input shaft pilot will not extend into crankshaft pilot bearing, clutch disc, input shaft will wobble around; no fun!
