my dad has an FMX in his 70 Mach 1 and that is a mean trans. it shifts harder than most other autos. the local ford garage told me awhile back that the FMXs were fords light-medium duty trans of the time, but they are much stronger than most of the newer autos.

The FMX is a solid transmission. I had a shift kit put into mine and it never glitched in the 50K miles I had it before parting with the car. I had a 351C with 318 HP (rear wheel on the dyno). If I had to go with an auto in a stang, I wouldn't hesitate to go with the FMX.
That's just my experience. Not sure about the others here. If it ain's broke, don't fix it. If it is broke, fix it better.

wow, havent heard of that trans for a while. i had one in a 67, with a floor shifter behind a built 289. it would not bolt up to a 351c. if i recall( and its been 35 yrs) it had 1/2 a bell housing compared to a full one that the c4 had.
