Default RE: GEARS

Its not bad replacing the ring and pinion alone. But, as long as you're in there, you might as well replace the bearings. You can get a kit that will give you everything you need for 80 bucks or so from summit. The only bad thing is that you need a press or one of the bearing removal tools to change the side bearings in the carrier. If your posi unit and axles are still in good working shape, why go through the hastle of replacing the whole rear end? You should be able to find someone to do the labor for under $300 or so.

Default RE: GEARS

Just a quick questions, I'm about to order Motive 4.10 gears. My Mustang has 49,000 miles on it. should i get a bearing kit, or is that something i can add on later after i get the gears? The reason i ask is, because people say if you stang has more the 60K miles you should do it, i'm right on that verge so i'm not sure, please help thanks.

Ok, so i found out from mustangspecs site that these are my gear ratios

V6 Model GT Model
1st 3.35:1 3.37:1
2nd 1.99:1 1.99:1
3rd 1.33:1 1.33:1
4th 1.00:1 1.00:1
5th 0.68:1 0.67:1
Final Drive 3.15:1 3.22:1

So, what does that mean? when you say gear ratio of 4.1 .. do you mean the first gear has 4.1 engine rotation to 1 wheel rotation ratio? or which gear is it ?

Also, I have an automatic transmission with 4 speed gear. How does that work in that case. I know when I put it in drive the car changes gear from 1 to 3 or 4 as required. But, .. I am not sure if these gears are same as the ones I can choose my shifting the gear lever myself. Can some one clarify?

Thnaks a lot.
The 4.10 gears he's talking about are the final drive, the rear axle ratio. That means that the driveshaft should rotate 4.1 times for each single rotation of the tire. The other ratios are inside the transmission and for example, the first gear ratio means that the engine
will rotate 3.37 times for each rotation of the driveshaft if you have a GT. Since you have an automatic, the gear selections you can choose are the same ones the transmission uses when it's in the OD position, but your ratios will be different than the manual ones.
You would have to find out which auto transmission you have and look up the ratios for it if you wanted to know. Hope this helps.

Having a low gear like a 2.73 is not made for top end power, it made to run at low rpms... so it is the exact oppisite, in 5th grear with a 2.73 or 3.08 Gt's are dogs. You will not lose top end preformance with a higer gear.

The best all around performance gear is the 3.73. Gas mileage isn't really affected, in fact we've had customers report better gas mileage when going to this gear from a 2.73 or 3.08. The 3.73 gives an excellent increase in acceleration and top speed isn't decreased because you are able to wind out overdrive further. With a 3.73 your rpm in 5th gear at 60 mph will only be 2005, not at all what you would call "too high". As we said, your top speed will not decrease when putting lower (numerically higher) gears in a car with overdrive. You will simply wind out 5th gear further than you could with the higher gears (numerically lower). reatio you will gain it. http://www.alternativeauto.com/techt...ips_50.html#q1

ever wonder what size tire would fit on a 18x9 rim or what a set of 4.10 gears would do to your top speed? well, I did, so I created a spreadsheet that calculates these for you

I would like to hear your comments..
